With so many ways to light your landscaping, it can be difficult to know where to start or what kinds of landscape lights will be the best for your unique aesthetic goals for your outdoor spaces. However, most landscape lights fall under four general categories:
- Spotlights. These are by far the most versatile kind of landscape lights. Spotlights shine in only one direction, which can be used in a variety of ways. One way is to use it as a floodlight, which takes a very bright spotlight and uses it to illuminate a large area. You can also use spotlights to highlight certain features of your garden by pointing them up, down, or sideways at certain fixtures.
- Bollard lights. If you have been in a landscaped garden before, you have likely seen these: they are short lights on top of posts, which can shine in all directions and illuminate the space at your feet as you walk along a path.
- Step lights. Classy and safe, step lights go along the bottoms of steps to illuminate them and make it easier for you and your guests not to trip in the dark.
- String lights. These lights add a whimsical note to any space you leave them in. Whether you use large bulbs, tiny fairy lights, colored glass, or shaped glass, string lights give you a lot of leeway in developing the character of your landscape.
These landscape lighting types are incredibly versatile, meaning you have almost endless options when it comes to styles, materials, and mixing and matching to cultivate what speaks to you.
